DESCRIPTION
Sculpture foot. Rome, 2nd - 3rd century A.D.
Marble.
Provenance: Private collection, Germany. Purchased at Gorny & Mosch, auction 179, 2009, lot 271.
Fragment in good state of preservation.
Measurements: 24 cm high; 38 cm long.
Roman sculptural fragment in marble, corresponding to a large scale foot resting on part of its original base. The piece clearly preserves the anatomy of the instep and the toes, treated with wide and soft volumes, which allows us to intuit that it belonged to a sculpture of notable size, probably an exempt figure or of monumental character.
The strength of this fragment lies precisely in its archaeological character. Although isolated from the original ensemble, the foot maintains a powerful sculptural presence thanks to the quality of the marble, the scale and the rotundity of the forms. The naturalistic treatment of the toes and the inclination of the foot suggest a figure conceived with a sense of weight, support and movement, features typical of Roman sculpture inspired by classical models.
This type of fragment allows us to appreciate the material and technical dimension of ancient statuary: the marble work, the anatomical construction and the relationship between figure and support. Its documented provenance in a German collection and its passage through Gorny & Mosch also provide a clear reference within the international antiques market.
Due to its size, material nobility and archaeological appeal, it is a piece with great decorative and collecting presence, capable of functioning as an autonomous sculptural fragment and as an evocative testimony of the monumentality of Roman sculpture.
