DESCRIPTION
Lucerne with dolphin. Greece, 3rd - 2nd century BC.
Terracotta.
Provenance: Private collection, Paris, France.
Condition: good condition, with superficial wear and deposits typical of its age.
Measurements: 7,7 cm long.
Small Greek terracotta lucerne decorated with a dolphin in relief, visible on the side of the deposit. The piece has a compact and simple shape, with a circular body, a central feeding hole and a perforated upper handle, typical features of ancient lamps intended for everyday use.
The dolphin was a highly appreciated motif in the Greek world, associated with the sea, navigation, protection and good fortune. Its presence in a lantern introduces a friendly symbolic note, linked to the Mediterranean maritime imaginary and to the protective character that this animal had in classical culture.
