Important Mayan terracotta incense burner from the Classic period, conceived as a ritual object of great ceremonial significance. The piece features a cylindrical structure consisting of two superimposed sections, decorated with faces modeled in relief, applied plastic elements, and traces of polychromy—elements that evoke the complex Maya religious universe.

Incense burners played a fundamental role in Mesoamerican ritual practices. Aromatic resins, especially copal, were burned in them, and the smoke was considered a means of communication with the deities, ancestors, and supernatural forces. In this example, the superimposition of masks or frontal effigies reinforces this sacred dimension, suggesting the presence of protective entities, deified ancestors, or figures of high ceremonial rank.

The expressive power of the faces, the prominent noses, the open mouths, the headdresses, and the decorative appliqués give the piece remarkable sculptural power. The remnants of reddish and light pigmentation allow us to imagine the object’s original visual richness, intended to impress within the context of the ritual.

The attached thermoluminescence test provides relevant technical support for its cataloging. Due to its scale, iconographic complexity, and ritual function, it constitutes a particularly significant example of Maya material culture and a prominent testament to the central role of smoke, offerings, and sacred images in the religiosity of the Classic Maya world.
