The piece stands out for the expressive power of its face, with large circular eyes in relief, a prominent nose, an open mouth, and visible teeth, all enhanced by decoration painted in reddish tones on a light background.

The Moche culture, which flourished on the northern coast of Peru between the 2nd and 7th centuries AD, achieved extraordinary mastery in sculptural ceramics. Their vessels were not merely utilitarian objects, but vehicles for a complex ritual iconography linked to power, death, fertility, war, sacrifice, and transformation. In this context, the depiction of the skull refers to the Moche funerary and ceremonial universe, where death was not conceived solely as an end, but as part of a cycle of renewal and transition.
