DESCRIPTION
Double-handled huaco with a stirrup-shaped handle. Pre-Columbian Peru, c. 600–900 AD.
Terracotta.
Provenance: private collection, Barcelona, Spain.
Measurements: 24.5 cm long; 18 cm high.
Double terracotta huaco, consisting of two bodies joined by a stirrup handle and a spout. The piece combines a simple globular chamber with a sculptural one, depicting a seated anthropomorphic figure with an expressive face, a raised arm, and details modeled and painted on the surface.
The double-vessel type with a stirrup handle is characteristic of various ceramic traditions in ancient Peru, where the vessel’s function as a container is integrated with narrative, ritual, and symbolic dimensions. In this example, the presence of the human figure transforms the vessel into an image with a strong ceremonial character, transcending its practical function.
The figure is rendered with simplified yet highly expressive features: a rounded head, prominent eyes, pierced ears, and limbs modeled directly on the body of the vessel. The position of the arm next to the face suggests a gesture that is difficult to interpret, possibly linked to a ritual, musical, or ceremonial pose. The surface retains traces of pigmentation and signs characteristic of its archaeological age.
