Medieval Indian sandstone relief depicting Shiva and Parvati, one of the fundamental divine couples in Hinduism. The scene shows the deities in a devotional composition, carved in high relief on a rectangular slab, with abundant bodily ornamentation, headdresses, jewelry, and attributes.

Shiva, the god of transformation, creative destruction, and ascetic energy, appears here alongside Parvati, his consort, a symbol of fertility, feminine power, and cosmic harmony. Their joint presence evokes the complementarity between the masculine and the feminine, between spiritual energy and generative force—a central theme in medieval Hindu iconography.

The piece stands out for the sculptural density of the carving and the richness of its details, especially in the faces, the adornments, the positioning of the arms, and the rendering of the bodies. Despite the losses and wear inherent to its archaeological age, it retains a remarkable compositional strength and allows one to appreciate the sculptural refinement of Indian workshops from the 11th–12th centuries.

Given its scale, material, and iconography, this relief is a striking example of medieval Indian religious sculpture. Its provenance from a private French collection adds documentary interest to a work with a clear devotional function, conceived to be integrated into an architectural or sacred context.
