Condition: generally good. The nose has been restored. Traces of greenish encrustations remain on the back of the hair, likely caused in antiquity by the marble’s contact with a bronze element.

An important Hellenistic marble head of remarkable sculptural quality, depicting a youthful figure with a serene expression and restrained drama. The work stands out for the delicacy of its modeling, the soft rendering of the features, and the tilt of the head, which introduces an intense emotional charge without disrupting the classical nobility of the face.

The iconographic identification allows for different interpretations. The hairstyle, featuring a small bun or braid on the top of the head, appears primarily in depictions of Aphrodite and Eros. However, the restrained drama of the face, its androgynous appearance, and the turn of the head also allow it to be associated with the type of the Amazon fallen in battle or wounded, a recurring theme in Greek art of the Classical and Hellenistic periods. In this regard, the parallel with the head of a fallen Amazon from the Amazonomachy relief that decorated the west pediment of the Temple of Asclepius at Epidaurus is particularly significant, as its position and expression bear similarities to the piece under study. Likewise, there are numerous Greek images of the adolescent Eros with a similar expression, one of contained drama and serene nobility.

This ambiguity is particularly appealing, as it places the piece within a richly varied iconographic landscape: between the youthful beauty of Eros, the idealized sensuality of the erotic realm, and the heroic pathos of the defeated Amazons. The face, with its deep gaze and closed lips, conveys a suspended emotion, characteristic of the Hellenistic taste for combining formal idealization and psychological intensity.

From a sculptural standpoint, the piece retains a remarkable presence despite its fragmentary condition. The modeling of the eyes, mouth, cheekbones, and hair reveals careful carving, while the remains of greenish inlays on the back provide an interesting material testimony to its ancient history, likely due to prolonged contact with a bronze object.
