Kraak dish; Japan, late 18th - early 19th century. Glazed porcelain. Measurements: 21 cm in diameter The Kraak or Ratchet will be one of the Chinese decorative styles that most permeates in Japan, since many pieces of this type were exported to the island between the late sixteenth century and the first half of the seventeenth century. It is a style intended solely for export, characterized by the compartmentalization of the eaves of the plates, the main typology of this style. In Japan, this scheme of alternating compartments is copied, forming radial borders. Japanese Kraak differs from Chinese Kraak, however, in the stylization of its motifs, much less naturalistic due to the Japanese aesthetic, and also in the appearance of geometric patterns, derived from contemporary textile designs. It is therefore a much more geometric style than Chinese Kraak.
