This vessel is based on rigorously studied models of the past, specifically the dings of the Shang dynasty. It presents a characteristic form of three legs that support the chiseled cauldron decorated with zoomorphic heads, referring to the sacrificial animal.
During the Shang Dynasty, bronze dings were the object of a refined design: richly decorated with abstract, geometric and taotie motifs. The bronze was cast using clay molds, a very advanced technique for the time. Many bore inscriptions recording lineages, offerings or ritual events. They were symbols of status and power: only nobles could own a certain number and size of dings, according to their hierarchy.
