DESCRIPTION
Vase; China, Canton, c. 1950.
Enameled copper and wooden base.
Measurements: 62 x 26 x 26 cm; 8 x 25 x 24 cm (stand).
Vase, from Canton, China, and dated c. 1950, made of enameled copper. The piece stands on an elegant carved wooden base.
Of quadrangular shape and elongated body, the vase displays a rich decoration divided into visual registers. In the central part, there is a white enameled panel with a meticulously executed naturalistic scene: a garden in bloom with peonies, ornamental rocks and a butterfly, all traditional motifs of Chinese iconography associated with beauty, spring and harmony. This panel is framed by polychrome borders of clear classical inspiration.
The rest of the body is covered by a deep red background, decorated with floral patterns and stylized scrolls in pastel and gold tones, evoking the imperial aesthetics and artisanal refinement of the late period. The combination of bright enamels, auspicious motifs and meticulous workmanship place this piece as a representative decorative exponent of mid-20th century Cantonese art, produced for both the local and export markets.
