Sandstone sculpture representing a seated Buddha, from the region of Quang Nam, Danang (Vietnam), and dated in the tenth century, within the cultural scope of the ancient Kingdom of Champa. It is a work that reflects the process of assimilation and local reinterpretation of Indian and Khmer Buddhist art, characteristic of Cham sculptural manifestations of the Middle Period.
The Buddha is shown seated in an attitude of meditation, with his hands resting on his knees, a gesture that suggests inner serenity and spiritual mastery. The figure, carved in a single block, shows a formal economy and a strong volumetry, with barely modeled surfaces and simplified contours, distinctive features of the cham style from the 9th to the 11th centuries. The absolute frontality, the hieratic posture and the absence of minute details reinforce the sacred and contemplative character of the image.
The face, with schematic features and peaceful expression, is framed by a voluminous and symmetrical hairstyle, possibly a stylization of the ushnisha, symbol of enlightened wisdom. The almond-shaped eyes, straight nose and slightly rosy mouth convey an air of introspective calm. The monastic robe, barely suggested by diagonal incised lines, adheres to the body in a natural way, showing the influence of the sculptural canons of Dvaravati and pre-Angkorian art, although reinterpreted within the formal Cham language.
The use of local sandstone responds both to the availability of the material and to the sculptural tradition of central Vietnam, where the My Son and Tra Kieu workshops developed their own austere and deeply spiritual style. The eroded surface and rough texture of the material give the work an archaic and venerable appearance, accentuating its status as a votive image.
