DESCRIPTION
Wedding chest; China, Qing dynasty, c. 1900.
Lacquered and partially gilded wood.
Measurements: 103 x 87 x 60,5 cm,
This wedding chest, made of lacquered and partially gilded wood, is from the late Qing dynasty period. The piece presents a rectangular structure of balanced proportions, reinforced on its edges and covered with a red lacquer surface.
In Chinese culture, wedding chests played an essential role in the marriage ritual, functioning both as a symbolic container and as a vehicle for social exchange. Traditionally, these chests were part of the jia zhuang, or dowry, that the bride's family gave as a contribution to the new union. They contained fine textiles, jewelry, household items or ritual garments, elements that represented material prosperity and family status. Their manufacture and ornamentation responded to a carefully elaborated symbolic program: the choice of colors, materials and iconographic motifs had to reflect wishes of happiness, longevity and numerous descendants.
