DESCRIPTION
Figure of Caishen (God of Wealth). China, late Qing Dynasty, early 20th century.
Polychrome wood.
Measurements: 23 x 13 x 11,5 cm.
This figure represents Caishen, one of the most revered deities of the Chinese popular and Taoist pantheon. Seated on a high-backed throne, he wears an official cap and a ceremonial robe decorated with a central dragon medallion, symbol of authority and prosperity. His face is painted a deep red, a color associated with auspicious power and protective force.
He holds a "Yunbao" gold ingot in his right hand to emphasize his role as a dispenser of wealth and success. Figures of this type were enthroned in homes and small temples, where they were offered gifts during the Lunar New Year and other festivals to ensure prosperity. The back shows simple woodwork, typical of the late Qing dynasty.
