DESCRIPTION
Guanyin on dragon. China, Qing Dynasty.
Gilt bronze (Avalokite?vara) on dragon.
Measurements: 26 x 11 x 11 cm.
A finely cast bronze figure depicting Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, shown standing gracefully on a coiled dragon emerging from stylized waves. Guanyin wears flowing robes with incised pleats and a beaded necklace across his chest. The right hand is raised in abhaya mudra (gesture of protection or tranquility), while the left hand holds a scroll or vial, symbol of wisdom or the nectar of compassion.
The serene face is framed by a high hairstyle that includes a small Buddha Amitabha seated on the diadem, a classic iconographic marker of Guanyin. Behind the figure is a detachable mandorla (halo) in the form of a flame, a symbol of spiritual radiance. The dragon below, with carefully detailed scales and head emerging forcefully from the waves, represents dominion over the forces of nature and Guanyin's power as protector of navigators.
