DESCRIPTION
Pair of vases; China, twentieth century.
Cloissoné enameled copper.
Measurements: 58 x 38 x 32 cm.
This pair of cloisonné enameled copper vases, made in China during the 20th century, is part of a long decorative tradition that reached its greatest splendor between the Ming and Qing dynasties, and that was taken up again with remarkable vigor in the artistic production of the modern period, especially for collecting and the international market.
Iconographically, the vases feature traditional Chinese motifs, including dragons and phoenixes, symbols of power, prosperity and harmony. The dragon is associated with imperial authority and vital energy, while the phoenix alludes to virtue, peace and rebirth; their joint presence is often interpreted as an omen of balance and good governance. The zoomorphic handles, integrated into the shape of the neck, reinforce the ceremonial and ornamental character of the pieces.
During the 20th century, this type of vase was produced both for interior decorative use and for export, combining classical models with an execution adapted to European tastes.
