Late Qing dynasty vase, dated 19th century, made of cobalt blue glazed porcelain on a white ground. It features an intricate decoration of lotuses and tendrils that completely cover the vase's reservoir, creating a variegated effect. Among the motifs is the symbol of double happiness (shuangxi), formed by the union of two xi (joy) characters, traditionally associated with marital happiness and marital harmony.
This auspicious emblem, deeply linked to wedding rituals in Chinese culture, began to appear more frequently on porcelain from the beginning of the 19th century and became particularly popular around the wedding of Emperor Tongzhi in 1872, an event of great historical significance.
