Chinese ratchet porcelain occupies a unique place in the history of art and global trade between East and West. Produced mainly during the XVI and XVII centuries for the European and American markets, these pieces were transported in the great Portuguese and Spanish ships, known as carracas, becoming objects of prestige since their arrival to the Western courts and elites. Their presence marked a turning point in European taste, decisively influencing later ceramics, silverware and decorative arts.
From an artistic point of view, Carraca porcelain stands out for the extraordinary quality of its paste, the intensity of the cobalt blue and the complexity of its compositions, where landscapes, floral motifs and symbolic narratives adapted to Western sensibility coexist without losing their Chinese roots. Each piece bears witness to a refined technical mastery and an early intercultural dialogue, which gives it an exceptional historical and aesthetic value.
