DESCRIPTION
Archaic plate in the form of Crescent (Huang). Qing Dynasty.
Dark nephrite jade.
Measurements: 26 x 13 cm.
Chinese hard stone plate, carved in semicircular form, decorated in relief with a dense composition of geometric motifs and stylized scrolls of archaic inspiration. The surface shows an elaborate work of continuous engraving, evoking traditional ornamental repertoires associated with ancient ritual objects.
It is a Huang (ritual pendant) or a fragment of a Bi disk. It presents a deep and symmetrical carving with motifs of Taotie masks and intertwined dragons. The surface has a rough texture and an earthy coloration that seeks to evoke the excavated pieces of ancient China.
This type of decorative plaques were made mainly as ornamental or collector's items, inspired by ancient forms, with no original ritual function.
It reproduces the archaic style of the Warring Kingdoms or Han Dynasty, although it is most likely a refined "archaizing style" carving made during the Qing Dynasty for collectors and scholars.
