DESCRIPTION
China, early 20th century.
"Scene with Shoulao and acolytes".
Green jade.
Wooden base.
Measurements: 5 × 23 × 16 cm.
Chinese sculptural group in green jade, carved in high relief, representing a scene of characters arranged in a rocky landscape with vegetable and fruit elements, symbol of prosperity, longevity and descent in traditional Chinese iconography.
The scene is presided over by Shoulao, the god of longevity, identifiable by his prominent forehead, his long beard and the staff he holds. He is accompanied by infant figures representing the blessing of numerous offspring. The carving makes masterful use of the natural variations of the stone, using the veins to represent the leaves of the peach tree of immortality that frames the figures.
The composition, dynamic and balanced, takes advantage of the natural variations of the jade to create chromatic hallmarks between the figures and the background. The piece is presented on a carved wooden base.
