This sculpture represents Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, one of the most revered figures of Japanese Buddhism, associated with salvation and rebirth in the Pure Land. Made of carved and gilded wood during the Edo era, the image stands out for its serene frontality and the elegance of the drapery, treated with soft folds that accentuate the contained spirituality of the figure.
The Buddha appears erect on a lotus, symbol of purity and awakening, while the hand gesture reinforces his protective and meditative character. The traces of gilding add luminosity and underline the devotional value of the piece, probably conceived for a domestic altar or a small temple. Its refined execution and balanced monumentality, despite its reduced format, place it within the late Japanese religious sculptural tradition, where formal simplicity becomes a vehicle for profound contemplation.
