The Hermès Birkin bag takes its name from the English singer and actress Jane Birkin, a muse to designers year after year, who, during a meeting with Jean Louis Dumas, the firm’s president, on an airplane, explained to him that she couldn’t find a comfortable travel bag where she could store her baby’s bottles, a book, etc., and that was also easy to open. Together they designed the Birkin bag to meet Jane’s needs, and the result is an accessory that has become one of the most coveted icons in the fashion world. This spectacular bag features a spacious interior with multiple pockets and, just as Jane Birkin had hoped, is easy to open. It is also extremely difficult to obtain, as very few are produced and there is a long waiting list to purchase one—which can even span years. This fact, combined with its understated, classic, and timeless design, has made the Birkin a legend and a collector’s item from the renowned Hermès brand.
