Copper plate with enamels of sepia and gray tones "in grisaille" highlighted in gold, which see its repercussion in the wing of the plate, ornamented with fruits of abundance and fantastic animals. The theme of Moses rescued from the waters floods the bottom of the plate, while the back of the plate has the face of a Greco-Latin god, possibly Zeus, surrounded by fruit garlands, tendrils and foliate motifs.
The episode of Moses being rescued from the waters is represented by a group of women wrapped in rich silk and satin attire, who are rooted before the Child, adopting dynamic choreographies. In the young woman who prepares to take him in her arms we identify Miriam, who will be his nourisher. According to what is written in Exodus, the princess discovered the basket with the child while she was taking a bath. She took pity on the child and looked for a midwife to feed him, Miriam. The figures respond to neoclassical models, in their facial ovals and sculptural canons.
The Limoges enamel has a long tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, in particular to the last painting of the twelfth century. It will be the most important enamel workshop in France, and owes its success especially to its production of enamel-decorated objects, in addition to the usual enameled plates. Its medieval pieces had their own characteristics such as a very superficial background dragging or a very fine partitioning for details, as well as an innovative chromatism that included new tones such as light blue-gray or white.
