DESCRIPTION

Vase with lid; Berlin, c, 1850.
Glazed and partially gilded porcelain.
Presents marks on the base.
Measurements: 36 x 33 x 22 cm.
Vase with lid, made in Berlin around 1850, made of enameled and partially gilded porcelain, characteristic of the aristocratic and bourgeois taste of the mid-nineteenth century. The piece presents a harmonious silhouette, with vertically fluted bodies and hand-painted multicolored floral decoration, highlighting flowers such as lilies, roses and bells that surround the entire surface, evoking the natural exuberance and elegance of European gardens.
In the center of the vase is a golden cartouche in the shape of a laurel wreath, adorned with light blue ribbons, inside which is a rococo-inspired gallant scene: a couple of shepherds in a bucolic setting, symbol of the romantic ideal of the time. This enamel painting stands out for its rich colors and attention to detail, typical of the high quality porcelain produced in Berlin.
The lid, also ornamented with enameled flowers, culminates with a naturalistic vulture figure, carefully modeled and enameled, which adds a singular and distinctive touch to the piece. The inclusion of this animal as a finial may allude to a specific symbolism or respond to a taste for the exotic, characteristic of 19th century decorative art objects.
The German firm KPM (Könifliche Porzellan-Manufaktur) was founded in the 18th century and is still active today as a reference in the field of artistic porcelain. It was founded in 1763 by Frederick the Great and is located in today's Wegelystraße.
