DESCRIPTION

Attributed to EDGAR BRANDT (France, 1880-1960)
Stand and vase, ca. 1930
Wrought iron and glazed ceramics
Measurements: 122 x 46 x 46 cm (pedestal); 80 cm (vase); 174 cm (total height)

Art Deco set consisting of an elegant wrought iron pedestal, attributed to the renowned French master Edgar Brandt, and a glazed ceramic vase decorated with Greco-Roman inspired motifs.
The pedestal, of sculptural design, stands on a tripod base with feet in the form of Greek greca. The structure, of openwork character, is formed by vertical beams joined by concentric rings, crowned by stylized scrolls and palmettes. This combination of geometric lines with synthesized vegetal elements reflects the formal language of Art Deco at its best.
The vase, which harmonizes perfectly with the metal structure, is decorated in the manner of Greek black-figure pottery, with Dionysian scenes: a young Dionysus with Thyrsus dances among white-robed maenads, while a satyr offers him a crater of wine. The polychromy and details directly evoke classical iconography reinterpreted under the modern aesthetics of the 1930s.

Edgar Brandt, a key figure in wrought iron design in the Art Deco period, achieved international fame for his ability to masterfully combine iron, bronze, gilded copper and other modern materials such as aluminum or "Studal". His work ranged from ornamental pieces for interiors to monumental commissions, such as the design of the Door of Honor at the Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in 1925. Brandt had a profound influence on his time and his followers included artists such as Raymond Subes.
