DESCRIPTION

Tea vessel; MEISSEN, Höroldt period (1720-1735).
Enameled porcelain under glass. Partially gilded with lacquer.
It has unglazed marks on the base.
It has restorations and flaws in the lid.
Provenance: Lot 1525 of the auction "The Sir Bruno Welby Collection of Porcelain", Woolley and Wallis February 6, 2025.
Measurements: 13 x 7.5 x 4.5 cm.
Porcelain tea box with yellow background and figurative scenes on all sides starring a seascape in each case. This piece is a magnificent example of the decorative language developed in the Meissen manufactory under the direction of Johann Gregorius Höroldt, who consolidated his own style by fusing Eastern tradition with a fully Western interpretation, making Meissen synonymous with excellence and prestige in the 18th century.
From the stylistic point of view, it stands out for the extraordinary quality of its polychrome decoration, executed with great technical virtuosity. The scenes, of oriental inspiration and fantastic character, are combined with exotic figures and imaginary landscapes, executed with a rich, harmonious and luminous chromatic palette on the unmistakable background of hard white porcelain. The forms, elegant and balanced, already announce the rococo taste, without renouncing to a clear narrative and ornamental vocation, which confers to the piece a remarkable artistic and decorative value.
