Porcelain writing desk whose ornamentation is a European reinterpretation of Chinese porcelain, highly appreciated for its exoticism in the West. The piece stands out for its chromatic richness, the use of gilding and the meticulous floral decoration, characteristic features of the Cantonese style.
The firm Samson, Edmé et Cie. was founded in Paris in 1845 by Edmé Samson, with the mission of creating replicas of the most outstanding ceramics and porcelains from museums and private collections. In 1864, the factory moved to Montreuil and specialized in reproducing both antique and modern pieces from famous manufactures such as Meissen, Sèvres, Chelsea and Derby. His creations were so appreciated that the firm continued in business until 1969. Today, his works are still highly valued and maintain a strong interest in the collectors' market.
