Villeroy & Boch dishes are highly sought after in the market because they combine a historic and prestigious brand (active since the eighteenth century) with high quality porcelain, elegant and timeless designs, and a great durability that makes them useful both for everyday use and for collecting.
The Mettlach location was the first of Villeroy & Boch's factories, situated on the Saar River in western Germany, in a former Benedictine abbey dating back to the 10th century. Founded by Jean-François Boch in 1809, the factory stood out from its early years for the great technological advances in its production, many of them due to machinery invented by Boch himself, who even created new and improved types of ceramic paste. However, in order to survive in the European market, Boch formed a partnership with Nicolas Villeroy in 1836, creating the company Villeroy & Boch, which is still in existence today. Soon the manufacture became the first in Europe, expanding its production to glassware in 1843.
