DESCRIPTION
Four plates: Compañía de las Indias, 18th century.
Porcelain, Rosa series.
Measurements: 25 cm (diameter; x 4).
Set of four glazed porcelain plates, made for the French market. They feature high- and low-temperature glaze decorations in the Familia Rosa style, depicting flowers in the center of each plate and a band running around the entire perimeter of both pieces.
The Rose Family style is based on the introduction of new glazes, the most famous of which is pink, which gave the style its name. Other new colors were also introduced, such as opaque yellow, white, and black—now used on its own (until then, to fix the black glaze, it had to be covered with a glaze of another color, usually translucent green). Technically, the most important of these is opaque white, as it could be mixed with other glazes to achieve a wide range of pastel tones, in addition to allowing for a smooth tonal gradation that made it possible to successfully imitate Western painting.
