DESCRIPTION

Glass; Bohemia, c. 1840.
Cut amber glass.
Measurements: 38 x 12 x 12 cm.
During the first half of the 19th century, Bohemian glass production achieved remarkable international prestige thanks to the technical excellence of its craftsmanship and the rich ornamentation of its pieces. Benefiting from an abundance of raw materials, the development of high-quality furnaces, and a long tradition of craftsmanship, the Bohemian industry succeeded in establishing its own distinctive style that combined the transparency and hardness characteristic of potassium glass with complex processes of cutting, engraving, and polishing, designed to satisfy the tastes of European courts and an expanding bourgeoisie.

This piece fully embodies this tradition. Its silhouette, with balanced proportions and crowned by a lid topped with a tall faceted knob, evidences an interest in neoclassical forms reinterpreted through the sensibility of the Biedermeier period, a style that dominated Central European production between the 1820s and 1850s. The amber hue, achieved by incorporating metal oxides during the glass-making process, adds chromatic depth and enhances the play of light created by the cut and polished surfaces. Of particular note is the decorative motif depicting a stag in a wooded landscape with lush vegetation. This type of hunting and naturalistic scene was one of the favorite motifs of nineteenth-century Bohemian glassmaking, drawing inspiration from the Romantic landscape and the close relationship between the Central European nobility and the sport of hunting. The precision of the design, the subtlety of the gradations achieved through grinding, and the contrast between the matte areas and the glass’s glossy surface demonstrate the high degree of specialization attained by Bohemian workshops.
