Pair of ornamental cups of neoclassical inspiration, made of biscuit porcelain with gilded bronze mounts. Porzellanmanufaktur A.W. F. Kister GmbH was one of the most prominent porcelain manufacturers in the region of Germany, particularly known for producing decorative figurines, sculptural groups, household porcelain, and ornamental objects intended for both the German market and export. The company was founded in 1862 by August Wilhelm Fridolin Kister (A.W.F. Kister) in the town of Scheibe-Alsbach, in the state of Thuringia. This region was one of Europe’s leading centers of porcelain production, thanks to the abundance of kaolin and a long tradition of craftsmanship dating back to the 18th century. During the final decades of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th, the manufactory achieved considerable prestige for the quality of its porcelain and the richness of its designs. It produced a wide variety of pieces, including Rococo-inspired figurines, folk characters, scenes of everyday life, animals, table clocks with porcelain inlays, and elegant tableware sets. Many of its creations show a clear influence from Meissen porcelain and 18th-century French designs, reinterpreted to suit the tastes of the international market. In 1900, the company was incorporated as A.W.F. Kister GmbH, and during this period it significantly increased its exports to Europe, Great Britain, and the United States, becoming one of Thuringia’s most important porcelain manufacturers.
