A pioneering painter of the avant-garde of the 1950s, Manuel Mampaso trained at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, and carried out important work as a set designer and costume designer in film and theater, in parallel to his painting activity. Throughout his life he held numerous solo exhibitions, and also participated in exhibitions such as the First Latin American Biennial in 1951. In 1960 his consecration came through the exhibition held at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, and four years later he was appointed artistic director of the Spanish pavilion at the World's Fair in New York. In 1987 an important anthological exhibition was dedicated to him at the Houston Museum of Art (USA). His awards include the National Theater Award (1972).
