Antonio Medina began his training at the School of Ceramics, and then studied for four years with the painter José María Salgas. He was also a free student at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando. For some time he worked intensely on the restoration of 19th century costumbrista works, and from this work he developed a love for the paintings of this genre, which he would later cultivate with a style that refers to the Spanish masters of the 19th century, although always showing an unquestionable personal character. In this genre he shows especially the influence of Fortuny, Madrazo and Jiménez de Aranda. In 1983 he held his first individual exhibition, in which he showed a series of canvases centered on the updated customs of Madrid. A magnificent cultivator of the costumbrista genre, this painter develops a language of sure strokes, brilliant colors and a rich evocative force, especially palpable in his period paintings. However, Medina also tackles other themes, such as landscapes and portraits, and he also works with success in watercolors. Since the eighties he has held several solo exhibitions, all of them with great critical and public success, and has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, held in various national galleries. Currently he is mainly represented in private collections.
