The landscape painting in England during the 20th century was characterized by a constant dialogue between tradition and modernity. After the Victorian heritage and the Romantic influence, many artists sought new ways of representing nature in a context of social, industrial and warlike changes. Figures such as the members of the New English Art Club renewed the direct observation of the environment, while later movements from Vorticism to certain expressionist and abstract currents introduced a more fragmented and emotional vision of the landscape. In parallel, painters such as Paul Nash or Graham Sutherland reinterpreted forests, hills and coastlines as symbolic settings, charged with psychological tensions and spiritual resonances. Towards the middle of the century, lyrical abstraction and chromatic experimentation further expanded the genre, always maintaining the landscape as a privileged territory to explore the relationship between the subjective gaze and a natural environment in transformation.
