The one that now is tendered is an intimate and silent scene that shows a young woman concentrated reading a great book leaning on a table, in a warm interior of brown tones. The composition, close and restrained, conveys a domestic, introspective and contemplative atmosphere, typical of 19th century genre painting.
Christoffel Bisschop was a Dutch painter and lithographer specializing in genre scenes, interiors and figures, trained in various cities, including The Hague and Paris with Charles Gleyre; He spent much of his career in The Hague, where he exhibited internationally and was noted for his depictions of traditional Hindeloopen interiors and costumes, was a member of important artistic associations such as Pulchri Studio, married fellow painter Catharina Swift, received distinctions such as the Order of the Crown of Oak and, after his death in 1904, his work and legacy were preserved in the Fries Museum, where his studio was even reconstructed.
