EDGAR WIETHASE (Antwerp, 1881-Uccle, 1965).
"Polo players."
Watercolor and ink on paper.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 28.5 x 28.5 cm; 51 x 50.5 x 1.5 cm (frame).
Lively polo scene, work of Edgar Wiethase. The work stands out for its agile and synthetic stroke, typical of a look close to modern illustration. The theme of polo, associated with aristocratic and cosmopolitan environments, reinforces the decorative appeal of the work.
Originally from Antwerp, Edgard Wiethase was a painter of interiors, portraits, still lifes and landscapes trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp with Charles Boom (1858-1939), Charles Mertens (1865-1919) and Piet Verhaert (1852-1908) and at the Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp with Frans Van Leemputten (1850-1914). He exhibited frequently in Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent and Amsterdam and his work is currently in important collections, including the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
