Throughout his career, Fernando Botero found in the still life one of the most fertile genres for developing his unique exploration of volume, monumentality, and compositional balance. Beyond the depiction of everyday objects, his still lifes constitute an artistic laboratory in which he explores the expressive possibilities of form, endowing even the simplest elements with a sculptural and timeless presence.

Created in 1973, at a time of full artistic maturity and growing international recognition, this drawing on paper reflects that quest with extraordinary clarity. Through a masterful use of graphite and subtle tonal gradation, Botero dispenses with color to concentrate all expressive power on the modeling of forms. The onions, arranged on a barely suggested textile surface, take on a monumental roundness thanks to delicate chiaroscuro and smudging that intensify their physicality, while the darkened background projects the volumes toward the foreground. The inclusion of the knife at the bottom introduces a linear counterpoint that balances the organic exuberance of the bulbs and reinforces the stability of the composition. The work highlights the autonomy of drawing within Botero’s body of work—not merely as a preliminary step to painting, but as a fully expressive medium in which the essential principles of his visual language are articulated.

Its inclusion in the exhibition *Fernando Botero – Aquarelle und Zeichnungen*, held at the Galerie Brusberg im Kubus in Hanover in 1974, constitutes an early testament to the international dissemination of his work on paper.
