DESCRIPTION
ANTONIO HEREDERO GUZMAN (Madrid, 1918–Vigo, 2008).
“Boats.”
Watercolor on paper.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 47 x 32 cm; 70 x 55 cm (frame).
Life at sea was one of the subjects Antonio Heredero treated with the greatest tenderness, both because of his preference for coastal landscapes and because of the work of fishermen and shellfish gatherers, whom he often immortalized with his technique of vibrant color and swift brushstrokes in a watercolor style.
A law graduate from the Complutense University of Madrid, he discovered his calling late in life—he held his first exhibition in 1967—but went on to achieve international recognition, with exhibitions in New York and a tour of Japan. Álvaro Cunqueiro said of his watercolors that they embodied “the enduring joy of a spring morning.” He also noted that Berbés’s paintings were taken to a country where watercolor painting is almost a national sport: Japan. He was unanimously named a Distinguished Citizen of Vigo by the groups on the Vigo City Council.
