DESCRIPTION

PALLE SUENSON (Denmark, 1904-1987).
Armchair, c. 1940.
Cuban mahogany wood, wildebeest skin upholstery and brass rivets.
Measurements: 80 x 57 x 71 cm.
Armchair with arms, made of Cuban mahogany wood and upholstered in wildebeest skin with deep stitching and brass rivets. It is an example of the integral approach to design that characterized Palle Suenson's work. The piece was executed by master carpenter Jacob Kjær during the 1940s, reflecting the close collaboration between architects and cabinetmakers in the development of Danish furniture in the first half of the 20th century.
As an architect, Suenson frequently designed furniture intended for the interiors of his own buildings, seeking to make each piece respond to the formal and functional principles of the surrounding architecture. His furniture shows clear affinities with the work of Kaare Klint, taking classical models as a reference, but reducing form to the essentials: the focus is on quality craftsmanship and noble materials, rather than superfluous ornamentation.
This armchair features Suenson's signature armrests, with a sharp angle that is directed towards the seat, generating a balanced and comfortable posture, while giving the piece a sculptural presence within the space. The combination of high-quality mahogany and wildebeest leather emphasizes material richness, while brass rivets underscore constructional precision and handcrafted detail, hallmarks of his design approach.
Palle Suenson was one of the most influential architects of Danish modernism, trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His work is characterized by a refined rationalism, where functionality and formal clarity are combined with a humanistic sense and a sensitivity for scale and proportion. Suenson not only designed buildings, but also conceived interiors and furnishings, ensuring complete aesthetic coherence and harmony between space and object. His legacy includes residential projects, interiors and furniture, establishing himself as a benchmark of Danish modernism in the mid-twentieth century, where craftsmanship excellence and respect for materials become the cornerstones of design.
