DESCRIPTION

JORDI VILANOVA (Barcelona, 1925-1998).
High sideboard model "Andorra". 1962.
Walnut.
Measurements: 132 x 100 x 45 cm.

This piece of furniture is a fundamental piece to understand the evolution of design in Catalonia and Spain in the early 1960's. Jordi Vilanova i Bosch was a pioneer in the introduction of modernity in the bourgeois home, and this "Andorra" model exemplifies his philosophy: a fusion between the artisanal tradition of cabinetmaking and the refined lines of European rationalism.

Unlike the long sideboards common at the time, this design opts for verticality. With its remarkable height, it optimizes space and offers an almost totemic presence. The central strip between the two storage volumes breaks the monotony and articulates the design.

A distinctive feature of Vilanova is the absence of conventional legs. The lateral sides of the cabinet extend to the floor, raising the central body and creating a space below. This provides great visual stability and a robust, architectural aesthetic.

The furniture is made of walnut wood, chosen for its expressive grain and warm tone. The design respects the natural grain pattern, using it as the only decorative element.

The name of the model, "Andorra", suggests a connection with the mountain environment or the weekend house. It is a piece of furniture designed to be solid and durable, moving away from fragility while maintaining an urban elegance.

Jordi Vilanova was crucial in the transition from classic to contemporary furniture in Barcelona. His designs sought to democratize good taste, eliminating superfluous ornamentation while maintaining the warmth that the Mediterranean public demanded. This sideboard is a testament to that gentle modernity that defined his career.

Jordi Vilanova's work is part of the collection of the Barcelona Design Museum.
