DESCRIPTION

MARIO BOTTA (Switzerland, 1943) for Alias.
Chair "Latonda".1987.
In steel, cold painted.
Measurements: 73 x 63 x 73 cm; 42 cm (seat height).

The chair "Latonda" manifests with clarity the architectural thought of the author transferred to the domestic object. Made of cold-painted steel, it is constructed from a continuous tubular structure, with firm and precise lines, which defines both the legs and the backrest in a single enveloping gesture.

The backrest is resolved by two parallel arches, a distinctive element of the model, which generate a powerful graphic presence and at the same time provide ergonomic support. The seat, with a perforated metal plane, introduces a contrast between mass and lightness, as well as underlining the industrial and functional character of the piece. The perforation visually lightens the whole and responds to practical criteria of use and ventilation.

Mario Botta is an architect and designer, trained in Milan and Venice, where he was a disciple of Carlo Scarpa and was influenced by Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn. He has been working from his studio in Lugano since 1970.

For Botta, lighting and furniture elements must have an autonomous formal presence and retain their aesthetic value even when they do not fulfill their main function. Light, in particular, is understood as a means to create atmospheres through contrast and the projection of shadows. This conception is reflected in his designs, where form, function and visual expression are integrated in sober, recognizable pieces with a strong sculptural character.
