DESCRIPTION
MARIO BELLINI (Milan, 1935) for Cassina.
Cab 413" chair.
Leather.
In very good condition.
Measurements: 80 x 50 x 50 cm.
"This was a new type of chair, constructed entirely of leather, much cloned since then". This is how Mario Bellini describes "Cab", a best-seller he designed in the 1970s, which is now a distinctive piece in Cassina's I Contemporanei collection. Cab was the first chair to feature a freestanding leather structure, inspired by how our skin adapts to our skeleton. The pieces are sewn together to ensure a perfect fit. Once assembled, the cover is attached to the steel skeleton of the chair and held in place by a zipper closure, as in a tailored garment.
Mario Bellini graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Milan in 1959, and began his career working on his own as an architect. He achieved early international success, both in the field of architecture and in urban planning and furniture design. In 1987 the Museum of Modern Art, which includes twenty-five of his works in its collection, dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him. Bellini has collaborated with major European and American design firms, including Artemide, Vitra and Flos. He has been awarded eight Compasso d'Oro and the Gold Medal for his work by the President of the Republic of Italy. His designs are currently part of prominent collections around the world.
