AFRA SCARPA (Montebelluna, 1937 - Treviso, 2011) & TOBIA SCARPA (Venice, 1935)
Set of four chairs, ca. 1980
Solid wood frame (probably stained beech) and black leather upholstery.
In good overall condition, with slight signs of use consistent with its age.
Measurements: 80 x 47 x 47 cm (each).
This set of chairs designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa around 1980 reflects the characteristic balance of Italian design between formal rigor and comfort. The clean-lined wooden frame contrasts with the black leather seat and backrest, whose curvature provides ergonomics and visual softness.
The combination of materials - warm wood and dark leather - defines a sober and elegant aesthetic, where functionality is combined with careful construction quality. A timeless design, representative of Italian rationalism reinterpreted with contemporary sensibility.
The couple Tobia and Afra Scarpa opened their studio in 1960. Their clients included Gavina, B&B Italia, Cassina and Meritalia. They received important awards, such as the Compasso d'Oro in 1969 and the International Forum Design in 1992. Their designs can be found in international museums such as MOMA, the National Museum of Design in New York, the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Louvre Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, among other institutions.
