DESCRIPTION

Viennese Thonet style bed; early 20th century.
Steam bent beech wood.
In excellent state of preservation.
Measurements: 110/117 x 195 x 115 cm.
Made of steam bent beech wood, the piece shows an industrial process perfected in the 19th century that made it possible to transform a rigid material into fluid, light and resistant lines. Stylistically, the bed responds to a sober and elegant language, characterized by economy of means and structural clarity. The curved forms, which describe continuous arches in the headboard and footboard, are not merely decorative, but derive directly from the technical process, making the construction the main expressive resource. This integration between form and function anticipates principles that would later become fundamental in modern design.
The piece is part of a material culture that, from Vienna, will radiate throughout Europe, linked to trends such as the Viennese Secession and the development of industrial design. Thonet is a fundamental firm in the history of modern design, founded in the 19th century by Michael Thonet. Its main innovation was the perfecting of the technique of steam bending wood. From its workshops in Vienna, the company revolutionized furniture by combining craftsmanship and industry, resulting in iconic pieces with clean lines and rational structure.
