Young's tables are characterized by the combination of metal structures of great technical precision, usually in chromed steel or stainless steel, with glass tops. Young opted for clean lines, geometric shapes and a rationalist aesthetic that emphasizes the quality of materials and constructive perfection. His designs reflect the influence of international modernism and avant-garde industrial design, resulting in furniture of great visual lightness.
Merrow Associates was founded in 1966 by furniture designer Richard Young and two engineers named Wyatt and Peter Weeks. Richard Young studied at the RCA in London, where he graduated at the top of his class. He subsequently won a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen with the renowned Ole Wanscher. In the early 1960s he was working as a staff designer for G Plan and created some beautiful designs, although not all were as successful as expected.
Merrow's coveted pieces were sold in Harrods, Heals and Oscar Wollens, among other outlets in the UK, and in other high-end showrooms in the US, Germany, France and Benelux. His unique designs were exhibited in the residential market, with one of his greatest successes being the design of the famous Ronnie Corbett chair. After forty years, James Young was finally able to pick up where his father left off and relaunched Merrow Associates in 2020 with his partner and fellow designer Mike Trott. The pair have recommissioned selected heritage pieces from the extensive vintage furniture catalog, along with the development of "New Merrow" items, carrying forward the history of Merrow Associates.
