Poul Volther created the prototype chair "Corona" in 1961, undoubtedly his most famous design. At first he used carved solid oak and then experimented with different materials until he found the ideal design qualities in steel. The "Corona" chair was finally released in 1964 to instant public and critical acclaim. Since its creation, this model has been shown in a wide variety of fashion, film and music videos. It was also the seat used by European heads of state during the Copenhagen summit in December 2002. It is a design that combines organic expression and technical efficiency; the four upholstered concave pieces provide maximum support for the body, and its forms openly refer to the spine and ribs of the human body.

Poul Volther trained as a cabinetmaker and later studied at the School of Arts and Crafts. He later taught at the Danish School of Art and Design, where he influenced hundreds of young designers and instilled in them a taste for quality craftsmanship. He was a prolific and intuitive designer who saw potential in things that others could not appreciate. He was part of a pivotal generation for architecture and design, working with other famous figures such as le Corbusier, Arne Jacobsen, Hans J. Wegner, the Eames and Alberto Lievore, among others. An advocate of functionalism, he was always aware of the importance of the manufacturing process, as fundamental as the final product.
