Designed by Santiago Roqueta in 1987 for Santa & Cole, this table lamp has established itself as one of the great icons of contemporary Spanish design. Conceived on the premise that lighting should bring warmth to the home, his design offered an elegant alternative to the technological aesthetic and metallic finishes that dominated much of the 1980s. The piece is characterized by a composition of great formal purity: a slender cylinder of birch or walnut wood rises from a discreet metal base with a nickel or bronze finish, establishing a refined dialogue between natural and industrial materials. Crowning the ensemble is the unmistakable conical shade that filters the light and produces warm, uniform, and inviting illumination—a feature that has, over time, become the collection’s hallmark.
Santiago Roqueta was an architect, designer, interior designer, publisher, and illustrator—a truly multifaceted figure. He earned his degree in architecture from the ETSAB (Escola Técnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona) in 1970 and practiced his profession, particularly in the field of interior design, both independently and in collaboration with other professionals, such as Emili Donato. He designed the interiors of spaces such as the Ponsa restaurant (1970), the Massana restaurant (1975), the Zeleste hall (1973 and 1979), La Barcelonesa de Vinos y Espíritus (1983), the Malic Theater (1984), the Snooker Club (1985)—for which he won the FAD Award for Architecture and Interior Design—the Els Balcons restaurant (1985), the Sisisí Bar (1986), the Ciento Gallery (1986), the offices of the production company Ovideo TV (1985–1998), Oído (1995 and 1996), Barcelona Televisió—BTV (1988), and the Arsenal Room (1998).
