The table up for auction fully embodies Gianfranco Frattini’s design language through its combination of architectural precision, structural elegance, and superb cabinetmaking. The design is based on a composition of clean lines and balanced proportions, where a visually light tabletop appears to float above two angular side supports joined by a central crossbar that provides stability and emphasizes the purity of the structure. The absence of ornamentation, the prominence of the construction, and the meticulous attention to the joints where the wood meets reflect Frattini’s philosophy, as he conceived of furniture as a balance between functionality, formal refinement, and artisanal quality—distinctive features of his work for Italian firms such as Bernini.

Gianfranco Frattini belongs to the generation of Italian designers of the 1950s and 1960s. He studied architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan and began his career as an industrial designer when he realized he needed appropriate furniture and lighting for the interiors of his architectural projects. In 1956, he was one of the founders of the ADI, the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale. Throughout his long career, Frattini collaborated with Gio Ponti, worked for Cassina and Acerbis, and designed lamps for Artemide, in addition to serving as a member of the Milan Triennale and creating designs for Knoll.
