The unique design of the Bose 601 Series II is based on Direct/Reflecting technology developed by the American company to combine direct and reflected sound and achieve a broader sense of spatial depth. The arrangement of the transducers—with one of the woofers facing upward and several tweeters projecting sound in different directions—defines their distinctive open-top design and sets this model apart from conventional speakers of its era.

Designed as a high-performance system, it also incorporated the Free Space matrix and an internal enclosure with separate sub-ports for bass. Its functional design, combined with the warm walnut-like finish and the expressive configuration of the cabinets, makes this pair a representative example of 1980s home hi-fi technology.
