Designed in 1973, this lamp belongs to a key period in the modernization of Spanish industrial design and to André Ricard’s fruitful collaboration with Metalarte. Model 4793 is documented in the company’s historical catalog and reflects the designer’s philosophy centered on functionality, clear construction, and the elimination of all superfluous elements.
The adjustable system allows for precise directional lighting without resorting to complex mechanisms. The combination of a transparent shell with an internal aluminum reflector reveals the lamp’s inner workings and transforms each technical component into part of its formal expression. This harmony between function, structure, and appearance exemplifies the functional ethos that Ricard championed throughout his career.
André Ricard is a key figure in Spanish industrial design and one of the founders of ADI-FAD. In 2016, he donated his archive and library to the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona, the institution that preserves and studies his legacy; he received the National Design Award in 1987.
