Designed in 1971, “Saturne” belongs to the early and most representative phase of Yonel Lebovici’s career, when the French designer began to define his objects as “functional sculptures.” This piece represents one of his most successful explorations of light, movement, and the balance between function and sculptural form.

The composition intertwines two large rings of steel and methacrylate, whose arrangement evokes the orbits of a celestial body and explains the model’s name. When lit, the transparent sections become continuous lines of light, while the reflective finish of the metal visually multiplies the arches. Lebovici thus constructs a dynamic volume, perceived differently from every vantage point.

His spatial imagination is linked to the designer’s early training in aeronautics and to the experimental spirit of French design in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The combination of industrial materials, orbital geometry, and integrated lighting places “Saturne” within the Space Age aesthetic, although its formal refinement and sculptural conception give it a particularly personal identity.

Yonel Lebovici trained in aeronautics and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués before opening his own studio in Paris in 1969. His work deliberately blurred the boundaries between design, sculpture, and everyday objects. His creations are held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris.
